Ireland

Frances drove 2600 km around Ireland, clockwise, with a manual transmission, without GPS, while I offered advice such as "Who has the right-of-way in this situation?" Most of the roads in Ireland are very narrow and winding, although they do have a few motorways now. It was one of the most impressive driving performances that I have personally witnessed. Her left leg, on the clutch, was feeling shaky before she even got out of the Enterprise lot, but by the end of the trip she could kick field goals with it, probably. We didn't test that. Ireland has more ruined castles and abbeys than you can shake a stick at. After a few weeks, when someone tried to tempt me with a ruined priory, I would ask, "How ruined is it?" If they said, "Quite ruined", I would reply, "Get back to me when it's completely ruined." And I have always been fond of ruins. Maybe I will be again in the future. We bought the OPW Heritage card, and besides the ruins it also got us into stately homes, museums, national parks, and neolithic sites, paying for itself more than twice over.
