Day 28 March 10th (Tuesday)
It ia still overcast but not as cold this morning
.
The birds kept us awake half the night. I don't know all the different kinds of birds that were out there but there were alot of white lorikeets and they are noisey.
We drove around Port Fairy as we were leaving to check out the fair grounds because there had been a 4 day Music Festival there. When we got to the fair grounds the tents were being pulled down. We were back onto the plains with miles of grazing land for cattle. We then drove onto Portland and got some groceries and gas.
We crossed into the State of Southern Australia at Mt. Gambier and the time changed by half hour (instead of it being noon it is now 11:30am).
Eric found an Iveco dealership so we pulled in to see if we can get the hood fixed. Eric still can't get the hood up even after it was supposedly fixed earlier. They can't get the part until tomorrow so we decided to stay here for the night. We checked into the campground early to wait until the part comes in. On our way to the campground "Winnie" got a bath at the carwash. Once we were settled we walked over to look at Blue Lake which is a volcanic crater and today it was a cobalt blue
. It turns grey in the winter so we were treated to the blue.
Day 29 March 11th (Wednesday)
It is overcast but not as cold. However we are still in jackets and long pants.
We returned to the Iveco dealership to see if the part had arrived and yes it had. Now we wait for someone to put it in and it was all done by 10:15. We drove to Kingston SE and the road is very bumpy. There was not much to see except alot of scrub land.
The scenery this afternoon offers alot more vineyards and grazing land.We stopped in Meningie for a walk about. The land is very dry and it has warmed up. We stopped in Murray Bridge for the night. I saw all different kinds of birds here that I hadn't seen before.
Day 30 March 12th (Thursday)
Another bright sunny day and warmer than it has been since Sydney.
We have noticed through out our travels so far that the houses are only one story set on a slab of concrete. We haven't seen a 2 story house yet.
The scenery this morning is rolling hills with grazing land as far as the eye can see. The land is very dry. We drove from Murray Bridge to Adelaide arriving about 11:30am. We managed to find a parking spot and then walked up to Rundall St. and along the mall. While we are waiting for the disces to be made of the photos from the camera we walked around to the Ayers House. He was appointed Australia's Premier 7 times between1863 and 1873. Ayers Rock is named after him and he is cheifly remembered for his development of Australia
.
We bought our lunch and took it back to the RV. There we decided to stay in Adelaide for the night. This is and has been the best campground. We went for a swim and it was so refreshing. We finally got on the internet and got the blog for Queensland done and sent. It was nice to be able to read for awhile.
Day 31 March 13th (Friday)
A very warm and sunny morning and suppose to go to the high of 31C.
After getting gas we drove on and just north of Salisbury we saw miles and miles of greenhouses -- olive groves, apples and there are still crops in the fields. Stopped in Port Wakefield for a coffee and a sweet (a treat).
There are more acres of grazing land, fairly flat and the hay and straw has all been harvested. We saw salt beds and there is a salt factory just outside Adelaide.
Port Augustus is the crossroads of Australia and bridges the Outback with the sea.
Later in the afternoon we stopped in Whyall for the night and we were right on the shore of False Bay in the Southern Ocean
. The tide was out and a few people were way out on the shoal exploring. It is very hot. The scenery today reminded us of the Dakotas only the soil is adobe red.
Eric surprised me tonight by suggesting we go to the S. Whyall Football Club BBQ next to the park for supper. It was t-bone steak with fries and salad bar. This was a treat and the 1st supper we haven't cooked in the RV -- it was great. The tide has come in and people are out fishing. There is no internet. It is a calm beautiful evening and the full moon over the water is beautiful.
Day 32 March 14th (Saturday)
It is a cool but gorgeous morning. During the night the wind picked up like crazy and Eric had to get up and put the canopy down. It was rocking the whole camper and I thought the camper was going to tip over. We got gas and headed down the coast to Cowell (the jade capital of the world -- this was founded in 1865 and is renowned as the finest).
For the first part of the day the scenery was very desert-like and then over the hill there was this amazing change in vista -- farmland and evidence of mining in the hills and the soil is red
. The way the clouds and sun are made it spectacular. We had a coffee and walk about in Cowell. Ruth P., the jewelery store was closed. The scenery from Cowel to Pt. Lincoln has been amazing with the vastness of farmland from the Spencer Gulf on one side to as far as you can see on the other side.
We stopped in the park along the water in Pt. Lincoln and had lunch. The sail boats were having a blast with this wind and were moving like crazy. This is where the Spencer Gulf joins the Southern Ocean.
We drove along the Flinder Hwy. to Elliston for the night. Flinder was the man who charted the perimeter of Australia and many a folk since have been trying to retrace his footsteps.
Day 33 March 15th (Sunday)
Another sunny morning but cool.
We continued along the Flinder Hwy. to Streaky Bay. From Streaky Bay to Ceduna there are lots of sand dunes as well as grazing land for the sheep. We didn't see any cattle today.
We arrived in Ceduna early in the afternoon after getting some literature on what we have to do to cross the Nullabor. I was able to get the laundry washed and dried on the line which was good. We walked to the beach and the rest of the afternoon to sit quietly and read.
