Back to Flores

Flores, Petén, Guatemala
Seven minibuses later, we'd found one which would take us back to Flores for the night. It was going in the wrong direction for our next destination, but was the easiest way to move on. So we clocked up some unnecessary road miles and headed back to the same hostel in Flores.

We had another different room which was incredibly hot, and watched a glorious sunset off the balcony. The hostel promised us a breakfast of a sandwich for our early rise (3.30am again) and we asked for it to be vegetarian, but held out little hope that it would be. Otherwise, we were pretty tired from our day's activities and early morning, so headed to bed a decent hour to get some rest before our next stop - Caye Caulker, Belize!

As for Guatemala as a country... from what we had heard from other travellers who had been to the country we kind of expected more. An undefinable 'more'. We really enjoyed the country but there was nothing that especially grabbed us as being spectacular and completely different from the others. Antigua was nice, Tikal is special, Lake Atitlan was pretty... but the areas we visited were so westernised and tourism orientated that we didn't feel we got a sense of the country, certainly nothing that made it stand out. Which was a bit disappointing as we were really looking forward to Guatemala! Having said that, it certainly wasn't bad. Price-wise, Antigua was expensive, the other places less so, but nowhere was 'cheap'. Transport was fairly cost-effective and got us to where we needed to be. The people were friendly enough, the countryside was beautiful, Tikal was amazing... but still, for us, after hearing so many good things about Guatemala we somehow missed the element that makes other travellers rave about this country so much.
