Day 1 - Travel Day

Miami Beach, Florida, United States

We woke up at 6:15am to some sleepy kitties . We had original plans for 7:00am to leave, but snow and an icy Jetta pushed us back closer to 7:45am. While scraping the tough ice off of the car, we both found it kind of ironic we were heading to the Caribbean with its lovely weather. Also, the last three times I've driven to MKE airport it's been snowy so it kind of makes sense.

We had to ditch our jackets when parking at MKE as we wouldn't need them nor would we have room to pack them in our luggage. The walk from the parking lot to the terminal was a bit chilly. At the gate, Alicia was also getting a little hungry so we ordered a bacon egg sandwich with a side of hash browns. It was delicious but we had to gobble it down as our flight was soon boarding.

We made it from MKE to LGA with no problems. We decided that we wanted to try out my American Express Platinum card to get into the Delta Sky Club. Here, we had snacks such as potato salad, chipotle quinoa salad, and walnut pasta salad. I was getting a little hungry so this was perfect! Alicia had a sovereign blanc wine and I had a Boston lager – delicious (especially since it was free*!). *free for me, just $29 for Alicia as my guest.

Our flight from LGA to MIA seemed to have lasted forever. It clocked in at just under 3 hours (which felt longer from waiting on the runway at LGA). It was pretty flying over NYC at sunset, though. I didn’t realize but it totally makes sense geographically, on our way from NYC to Miami we flew over the Atlantic Ocean. Once we landed we had no problems retrieving our bags and calling an Uber to our hotel - the Clay Hotel in Miami Beach . We had another passenger that gave us some good recommendations for things to check out for tomorrow (remember this for later).

After checking into the hotel and lugging our luggage a half block to the building we were staying at, we were hungry. For our room, we were offered newly remodeled and no view room or an old room with a nice balcony view. We picked old! The balcony was nice and the building was a little bit away from the main alleyway and restaurants on Española Way. We also had a corner room on the top floor - bonus!

From the hotel clerk who checked us in, we had a recommendation to check out Numero 28, an Italian pizzeria. It was delicious. We ordered an 18" Hawaiian pizza and it was definitely one of the best Hawaiian pizzas I have ever had with the fresh pineapple and Canadian bacon.

It was just after 9 at this point, so after dinner we explored a bit of Washington Avenue and the Miami Beach nightlife. Even though it was getting late, there were still people everywhere out and about. We found a CVS on Lincoln Road and purchased some juice and Gatorade for our time in Miami. We also found a neat little park, the Soundscape Park. It was beautifully decorated with flowering trees and bright with lights.

We were quite sleepy from the travel day including 14.5k steps we somehow managed to log so we made our way back to our hotel and got some zzz's before our adventures tomorrow.
