We experienced very heavy rains early this morning. I was
awakened about 2 am with the sound of fierce winds and driving rain. And also
because the power went out. Since I sleep with a CPAP machine, when the power
goes out I wake up because I can’t breathe very well. But after about 20
minutes I heard the big diesel generator start up and I rolled over and went
back to sleep. Until the power came back and it was interrupted to the room
when they cut off the generator and then reconnected to the power grid. Oh
well, that’s all nothing new.
We met downstairs for breakfast, and then we each retired to
our rooms to work. I worked steadily for much of the day, but wasn’t able to
get as much done as I would have liked, but I got quite a bit.
This evening we had a Bible study with the Kumasi church. I
know where they meet, but it is not one of the places I could direct a taxi to,
so I called our local pastor, Adonijah Blay, and asked for his help getting a
taxi. He called back a little while later letting me know a driver will be at
the hotel at 5 pm to take us to the Bible study which is to start at 6 pm.
Mr. Horchak suggested we walk back over to the mall about
3pm to eat an early dinner. Since I hadn’t eaten since breakfast, that sounded
good to me! It is cloudy and much cooler after the rain, so the walk wasn’t
bad, and I wasn’t pouring sweat by the time I got there or got back to the
hotel!
We ended up choosing the same restaurant as last night (it
is air-conditioned), and this time I chose a spaghetti dish. Must have been the
same cook as before, because she/he quite unnecessarily amply seasoned my
spaghetti with pepe. I suppose I’ll either get used to it, or learn to ask they
not put it on my food, or I’ll cauterize everything from my mouth to my stomach
in time with pepper burns…
We were both downstairs at 5 waiting for the taxi, except he
didn’t come. After a couple of calls we found out they were on their way, and
finally came about 5:45. By the time we arrived at the building it was nearly
7, but the brethren were understanding and were waiting patiently. A couple of
them had travelled early to hear Mr. Horchak, and had been at the hall since 4
pm! We felt quite badly about being so late, but there was little else we could
do. And the brethren understand because this is just a part of life in Ghana.
Mr. Horchak gave a Bible study on Christian Priorities,
which was very well received. We had 24 members of the Kumasi congregation present. We had time for some fellowshipping afterwards,
and a picture with everyone before we all needed to start back home.
The taxi had waited around for us, and he took us back to
the hotel, a trip that went much more quickly with much less traffic!
Mr. Horchak and I were able to go up on the rooftop patio of
the hotel to enjoy the cooler evening and any breeze that blew through, and
relax and talk a little more before we returned to our rooms for the night. The
hotel van will take us to the airport in the morning for our noon flight down
to Accra, and then on to Lagos by tomorrow evening.
