This morning Dayna had to present herself to the local police station to clear up a minor malfeasance. For breakfast, we had eaten bread and water to get her assimilated to her situation, should her hearing go south. We showed up at her summons time (somewhere between 9-5). The policeman was friendly, but stern, with the accused. He sent us to the Tobac store (tobacco) across the street to pay the fine and return post haste with the proper stamps affixed to her paperwork. With that completed, the parking fine was paid and she was released on her own recognizance. For her good conduct, the policeman gave her a city police patch to cherish . . . and to remind her the eyes of justice never sleep in Bayeux, France!
An interesting side note
. At the end of World War One, the French government had a very real problem. There were a mess of veterans missing arms and legs. The government couldn't afford to pay pensions to them all. Cigarette smoking was just catching on in France due to the American soldiers' habits. So, the French government started cigarette franchises and only disabled vets could get them. In each village or local vicinity, each vet had a monopoly! That is the only store where you can get tobacco products, even today. The Tobac shop. Over the decades, they have had to take on some government responsibilities, like taking care of parking ticket fines. Interesting!
With the reformed offender back behind the wheel, we headed off to the beaches to show Dayna a few of the D-Day sites including the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach and the battle site at Pointe du Hoc. Both I had seen yesterday, but today was a mostly sunny day as opposed to yesterday, which was rainy and windy.
On our way back to town, we stopped at a cider farm and tasting room
. It was right next to the American Cemetery so the farm had an interesting war history. The farm has been in the family since 1920 but, during the war, the Germans took it for a barracks for the coast artillery crews. The family went to Paris for the duration. Then, when the Americans landed, they leveled the whole farmstead to use as the first airfield in Normandy. There went the apple orchards! After the war, the family moved back and replanted the apples on the newly level grounds. The Americans must have needed the home and barns because, through it all, they survived and are very old.
We did some tasting. Dayna did some schmoozing and we left with some apple juice, some 4.5% Apple cider, some apple jelly and an apple brandy that has a real kick to it. All grown and produced on the farm. It is interesting to know that Normandy is the only province in France that dose not make wine. It is too wet, so the region is famous for its cider, instead.
We were back in Bayeux for a quick lunch, and then we headed to our timeshare home back at Connelles, south of Rouen. It was a two hour drive.
We stopped in our village at a little market for some sandwich meats in a meat market, some fruit in a fruit and veggie shop and added a baguette that we had already picked up in a bread store. Dinner. God is Great!
