We caught a bus to Boston from Saratoga Springs with the journey taking about 5 hours. The states are all fairly close together in this part of the USA. 

On arrival at the Boston bus station we walked for about a kilometre to the Berkley YWCA hostel . Previously for women only, it now takes couples as well in private rooms with shared shower and toilet facilities. Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the US for accommodation so we were pleased to have an affordable base right in the city centre. The hostel was a bit unique in that it provided a hot breakfast in the price and for a further $7.50US each a 3 course evening meal boarding school style. It was great! The weather was sunny but freezing cold with a wind that went right through you. We do not have enough warm clothes but don't want to buy any as hopefully the weather will warm up. The max is only about 8 degrees.We enjoyed walking around all the historical sites of Boston and learnt about the early days of the colony through to independence. Boston is a beautiful city built around Boston Common, a huge park that has remained a common since the founding of the city.

On looking at our map we realized we were not far from Newport, Rhode Island, the site of the America's cup challenges so on our last day in Boston we took a bus ride down so we could see where Australia took the cup from the Americans in the 1980's. It was a freezing cold blustery day but we enjoyed a long walk around the harbour and town. Newport is a holiday destination for New York and Bostons rich and famous and the town is mostly old mansions built early 1900's as holiday houses. Back to Boston that night to get ready to get up at 4.30am to walk the 1 kilometre to the bus station to catch a 6.00 am bus on to our next destination.
