Market Day in Sarlat

Sarlat-la-Canéda, Aquitaine, France
We set off early from camp so that we could make it to the market in Sarlat in the morning while all the food stalls were set up. We stopped along the way to stock up on groceries and fill up on gas. We arrived in Sarlat around 11 am which meant we had at least an hour of perusing before they started packing up. Sarlat's market is huge and fills several streets in the centre of town. We had been on our trip in 2008 and were looking forward to it again today. We first headed in to the TI to grab some information on the region and ask about cycling paths. After, it was time to snack our way around! We left the TI and were greeted by a lady selling cured sausages. She had six different types plus a cured boar ham. Unfortunately I had a cold and wasn’t able to taste anything so it was up to Anoop to decide if we should get some or not. He decided that they were delicious and that we should take advantage of their deal – 4 sausages and a ham for 20 euros. I asked how long they would keep and she said to wrap them in a tea towel, put them in the cupboard, and they would keep for up to 6 months. We figured we would be able to eat them before then! The area is known for its walnuts and we picked up a nut cake that we figured would be nice with tea. We also got some walnut oil for salad dressings. There were lots of people selling whole walnuts and we saw a few shoppers heading off with huge sacks filled with them. We continued our way around and found some sunflower honey which was a new type for us. There was lots of foie gras for sale and truffle related products since it is truffle season. Then it was time to check out the non-food stalls. We picked up some nice soap from one stall and then just perused. There were lots of clothes, purses, jewelry, and tablecloths for sale. We passed by some very nice olive wood cutting boards and salad spoons but decided to wait until we are in Provence where there is more selection. When we finished we headed off to find our campsite which was a very convenient 9 kms away. We settled in to a nice flat spot near the heated facilities. Heated is definitely a bonus! We had great views of the town & château of Beynac from camp and decided to wander in to look around after lunch.

There was a path into Beynac from our campsite which took about 20 minutes to mosey in to town. We noticed a bunch of people fishing along the river and noticed them catching shiner-size fish and tossing them in a net in the water. We figured perhaps Saturday was the day to catch bait and Sunday is the day for real fishing… We also noticed a nice path along the riverside and decided to go for a walk before heading up in to town. It was a beautiful walk with great views back on the château. We eventually turned around although we would like to explore it further another day. We walked up through the steep and cute street that leads through the pedestrian area of town. Apparently they filmed part of the movie "Chocolat" here so we are going to try to figure out where. It was a lovely afternoon for a walk and we were glad we had got out to enjoy the sunshine.
