San Sebastián - Donostia, Basque Country, Spain and Canary Islands
From seaside San Sebastian I took a city bus inland a few
miles into the hills to a suburban area named Leku for the Chillida-Leku Museum,
an open-air museum on a green hillside where Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida
gathered many of his works for display .

The appeal of much modern art is often a little beyond me,
but I do like Chillida’s character and many of his works, at least when they
are in a fitting location like the outdoor museum and inside his large
farmhouse on the site. Chillida was a leading figure in twentieth century abstract
sculpture including things like oversized rocks with cuts carved into them and
twisted chunks of rusted steel which can be very dramatic in good locations
like those along the coast in San Sebastian. They create some variety when so
much statuary is still of dead white guys on horses or other heroic poses or of
naked women in seductive poses.
