This is going to be an exciting cruise.
Our main destinations are Iceland and Greenland. But there's more as well.
For one thing, we'll be sailing on Explorer, the newest ship in the Regent cruise fleet. It's been described to us as being really glitzy, with lots of expensive, original artwork and sculptures.
On previous Regent cruises, we've sailed on Voyager. It's about 20 years old, and is showing its age. Among other problems, it creaks loudly whenever the ship moves as it passes through even moderately rough water.
The trip began at San Francisco International Airport.
We were on a British Airways A380, the big double-decker Airbus.
Luckily for us, Regent includes free business-class airfare, so we were seated on the upper deck, in comfortable pods with lay-flat seats.
The captain informed us that we would be taking off toward the west, and then turning to the right, giving us a wonderful photo opportunity over San Francisco.
But this is what we saw: nothing but fog.
I did see the top of Sutro Tower peaking through the clouds, but that was about it.
So I put the camera away, and settled back for our 9.5 hour flight to London.
