Canada?       People often describe New Zealand as a mini Canada for its geographic diversity, climatic variations and even the similar temperaments of its people.      We get it, particularly on the south island.

On the South Island, the west coast (like the Rockies) is defined by a length of alps that runs the north-south length of the land, creating a rugged thin coastline which catches the weather from the wide open Tasman Sea to the west and Antarctic to the south .   

Less than 1% of the country's population live on the west side of the alps.    The one road running the length of the coast gets full marks for actually hugging the coastline.    Rugged, twisty and stunning all the way.       Backpackers, caravan renters and hikers define the visitor demographic.      Highlights for us:
