Colombo, Sri Lanka

It was lovely to see Aaron and Nellie’s smiling faces
waiting for us as we entered the arrivals section on the B….. airport terminal. After greeting them we all made our way
outside to their waiting car. Despite
the early hour the heat of Colombo hits you as soon as you step outside. After stowing our luggage in the boot we were
pleased to escape the heat when we climbed into their air conditioned car to
commence our journey towards Kandy and eventually our planned destination of
the Lavender House.

As we drove away from the airport it took a while to adjust
to our new surroundings. There is a vast
difference from one day driving through the streets of Paris to the next day driving
on the streets of Colombo. Instead of
driving in traffic embracing all things modern and where road rules are
paramount - Colombo is the complete opposite with non-existent road rules and the
traffic comprising aging buses, trucks and a myriad of cars, motor bikes and
tuk-tuks and not to mention the cows that appear randomly along the road.

In Colombo, you spend as much time driving on the wrong side
of the road as you do on the right side.
This is necessary in order to pass the much slower vehicles and also avoid
all the pedestrians who use the road as a footpath. We were just glad that Aaron was doing the
driving as he seems to have mastered the art of driving Colombo style.

Aaron and Nellie had arranged a stop off at an
Elephant orphanage.
