Albury/Wodonga

Albury, New South Wales, Australia
Slept rather well on Emma's guest bed/lounge. Up early @ 7am. Quick coffee and tablets while Em had a shower and got dressed for work.

We drove into town (Albury) in search of breakfast found a little cafe and convinced them to amend their big breakfast and make it vegan friendly . They did a good job..

Em had to go to work so left me at the cafe to finish up and chill out. I sat for a while and finished and published yesterday's blog. I then went for a wander around Albury to see what I could find. Bought myself a new shoulder bag. I'm kicking myself as I almost packed my one from home but didn't at the last minute... Now I realised I need it so am shelling out for another one.....

Made my way to Emma's work, the Albury library/Museum. Had a quick look around. Emma had left me a map of the town and a walking tour guide at reception. So decided to try the tour. Anything to add to my step count. I've got to make up for my recent laziness back in Perth not walking as much as I should.

All in all there are 13 stops on the walk.. Some more interesting than others so I'll convey the more interesting ones, well from my point of view anyway.

I expect I should start at the first place I saw in Albury . Albury railway station where I alighted late last night.

Albury Railway station was once one of Australia's most important rail terminals. It acted as the transfer point for the change in rail gauge between NSW and Victoria, as standard gauge between Sydney and Melbourne was only introduced in 1962. Symmetrically designed in the grand Italianate manner, the station was first used for public service on 26 February 1882. At over 450m, the station platform has been credited as one of Australia's longest.

One other of the stops I believe needs a mention is Albury Botanic gardens. Opened in 1877 and originally layed out in the form of a Union Jack. Apparently there are over 1000 plant species there is even a lone pine from Gallipoli, planted in the garden on ANZAC day 1936.

The tour took me about 2 hours.... Exhausted and a little sunburnt I met Em at her work for lunch. We couldn't decide what to have so wandered around a while looking for vegan friendly eateries ... Then happened on a sushi train and Emma insisted in dining there. It wasn't bad...not many vegan friendly options bus sufficient to fill the gap.

After lunch Emma had taken a extra long lunch break and drove me out into the Albury/Wodonga surrounds. We visited the Hume dam and stopped for a photo op. Made our way back via Wodonga, passing many army bases.. My count was 5 in total.

Back at the library/museum in Albury, Em had to go back to work for the last 2 hours of her work day so I had to kill another 2 hours. Emma asked me I I could take one of the museums audio tours and give her feedback on it. So I thought why not..... It was a bit more informative looking through the exhibits a second time with someone talking in your ear and telling you what you are looking at. It gave a bit of the back story and some history of Albury too so all in all not too bad.

Still with some time to kill I went for another wander around. I found a cool, air conditioned cafe ( it was still rather warm outside.... Maybe not as hot as Perth got today but still uncomfortable) and sat and started this blog entry.

Once Emma finished work for the day we went home. I had a quick shower to wash off the sweat and change to clean clothes then it was off to Kinross wool shed for Emma's weekly trivia session with her AAFC friends. Basically a quiz night. We were one of 3 teams. Apparently there is normally about 10 teams.. But for some reason tonight it was a little light on. We did OK.. But not as well as we would like... Getting the booby prize for 3 rd place.... Me being the blow in got to keep the stubby holder.. Nice!

A few bevies and some chin wagging... Then time for home.... Sitting here now finishing off this entry.... With view to going to bed soon.... So hot chocolate time me thinks .. TTFN.
