$1.50 minimum

Houston, Texas, United States
I was rolling down the Beltway 8 toll road outside Houston the other day. We have an "ez tag" on our car which means we can speed through the toll plazas and not have to stop and pay the fee. It's quite convenient and supposedly works all over Texas. I actually have a Florida state toll pass on my windshield as well from the last time I spend a lot of time in Florida. Yesterday, as I was approaching a toll plaza, I noticed the sign for those cars without the ez tag. It told them to approach the gate with caution and there was a $1.50 minimum charge. I know it meant that you had to pay $1.50 and no less but in a moment of whimsy, I took it to mean that you could pay $1.50 or any amount over that you wanted! I just couldn't imagine someone pulling up to the toll plaza personnel and stating, "Oh, gosh, can we please pay MORE than the minimum? We'd really like to pay $2.00 or $3.00."Then I realized that I have actually done that as has my husband and my daughter. Years ago, the tolls to cross most of the bridges in the San Francisco Bay area were $1.00. We routinely rolled up to the road personnel and paid $5 or so and would tell them to let the next 4 cars behind us go through without paying. Usually, someone we knew was in the car behind us but often, we'd just do it for fun and to give someone a break for the day. It was always interesting to see how long it took the toll plaza personnel to explain to the next car that they didn't have to pay the toll. Often we would see the car speed up to pass us then and we'd get a wave of thanks.Nowadays the toll to cross the bridges is higher and we're not in that area now so we don't do that but I thought, gee, I could do it again here. I can afford an extra $1.50 every once in awhile to let someone get off the toll road for free. So that's my mission for the week. Pay someone's toll just because I can. Yes, I will stop and say, "Gee, I would like to pay more than the minimum please." It's always nice to pay it forward.
