Back to Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, Cambodia
In our morning's wanderings in Kratie for bus confirmation, breakfast and coffee, we found Ania and had a drink with her before saying goodbye. The bus turned up on time, amazingly, and we headed off towards Phnom Penh. Other than quite loud films, which we couldn't understand and where the characters talked incessantly, the bus journey was fine and uneventful. We stopped in familiar places along the way as we re-traced our route. Going south towards Phnom Penh was evidently quicker than going north and away from it, as we reached Phnom Penh in six and a half hours. We fought off the touts, including one who tried to tell us that where we were staying was very far away - even though he didn't know where we were staying - bought a bus ticket to our next destination for early the following morning, and walked to our hotel.

Unfortunately for us, the hotel had booked out it's air conditioned rooms, despite us reserving one in advance. The owner was full of apologies, and offered us a reduced rate room with a fan instead. We decided to look elsewhere, and he threw in a free breakfast and transport to the bus station the following day as well. After checking the quality of the fan, we decided to stay.

We headed back to the two vegetarian restaurants a couple of blocks away from the hotel, and had another great meal. Which was welcomed because it had been a long time since breakfast. We tried to be productive with the evening, and picked up water and snacks, got cash, some necessary drugs, and got Ken's sunglasses fixed. Again. This time, the bank we'd been using without a charge was charging us. We tried to find one which wouldn't charge and failed, eventually having to suck up the several dollars just to access our own money. The sunglasses were fixed by three chaps and their mate, who were having a picnic with beer on the floor of the opticians. They seemed to do a good job, and gave us water while we sat and waited. After about 20 minutes the sunglasses came back - apparently fixed (so far so good...) - and they wanted no money for their time. We gave them some anyway, at least for the materials they'd used, and headed off proclaiming what nice people the Cambodians are.

After another lumpy bed and a fairly terrible night's sleep, we were awake early for our pre-arranged free breakfast the following day. Of course, this didn't materialise and we had little time before our bus. We chased it, wolfed down what we could before we had to leave, and went to get our free remorque to the bus station. After some chasing, we got the free remorque, and got to the bus station just in time for the bus.

Next stop - Koh Rong!
