State Russian Museum

St. Petersburg, North-West Russia, Russian Federation

Two blocks in from Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral was the State Russian History Museum. Most people flock to the more famous Hermitage but there are many more museums rich in artwork and history.

Unlike the Hermitage this was included in my tourist card and there were no crazy line ups.

The art in here was much more impressive than that in the Hermitage. Most were room size giant canvasses displaying many historical re-enactments.

You probably need as much time here as in the Hermitage.   In addition to classical art other wings had other displays

There were folk crafts, wood carvings, and other folk traditions. Another wing had Christian art, either painted or wood carvings.

This is a highly recommended museum not to be missed if visiting the city

This looks like a really interesting museum. We found the Hermitage very good but in the end, it was quite overwhelming. We were disappointed with the few Kandinsky artworks. Those escalators are incredible and also had to be so deep I believe to avoid all the underground streams. It looked quite funny looking at people travelling down them, almost like they were lying down!
