Beauty and Boxers in Upstate New York

East Greenbush, New York, United States
We stayed up late last night sitting by the window of our hotel room and watching Niagara Falls lit in multiple and changing colors. It is mesmerizing to watch the water, the mist and the lights. Even this morning, in the rain, the view was just amazing. But we had to get on our way.

We left the hotel fairly early -- about 8:30 AM -- and crossed into the USA at the Rainbow Bridge, where only automobile traffic is allowed . There was virtually no traffic on the bridge and we were able to drive right up to one of the immigration booths with no waiting. The weather was pretty miserable with clouds and rain, so we just got onto I-90 and headed east.

By late morning, the rain had ended and we saw a sign for the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, NY at the next exit. Karl has always been a going fan, so we decided to stop for a visit. The Hall of Fame was located conveniently right next to the exit. Inside we found lots of photos and memorabilia dating from the early days of boxing to the present. One of the interesting things was a collection of castings of boxers fists. George Foreman's fist was the second largest. I'd watched quite a bit of boxing with Karl, so there were lots of people I recognized, too -- in addition to the ones everyone knows, like Mohammed Ali. Next door to the Hall of fame was a building that housed their gift shop and the original boxing ring from Madison Square Garden in New York City . That ring was used from 1925 to 2007 for some of the most famous boxing matches in history.

After our visit to the Hall of Fame, we stopped for lunch at a "world famous" restaurant owned by Tony Graziano, a restaurateur and boxing promoter. Lunch was very good -- we split an Italian sausage and pepper sandwich. The last couple hours of our trip were very scenic, but literally painful. Upstate New York is gorgeous with farms, forests and the Adirondack mountings. But two days in the car for about 6 hours each day made our backs ache and our muscles cramp.  Unlike most of our car trips where we stop every hour or so, on this trip we were just trying to make miles. In the last hour of the trip today we stopped twice, just to get out of the car and move a little.

We arrived at our hotel and decided to just stay there for dinner -- there was a Denny's right in front of it. The food was surprisingly good. After dinner we took a little drive to Walmart and a liquor store for supplies and then called it a night early.
