Hohenwerfen Fortress - Zell am See

Zell am See, Salzburg, Austria
Another drizzly day driving the back roads through the pretty towns of Abtenau and Golling. Enjoyed stopping by Lammerklamm, a deep gorge. Would have been nice to hike here if better weather.

Hohenwerfen Fortress: Great views from the road of this 11th century medieval rock castle. Situated 2,044 feet above the town of Werfen and surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps and Tennen Mountains, it's a very impressive sight. Took the funicular up.

Lots to see in the Courtyard: costumed people demonstrating medieval crafts, music, sword fighting show, food, etc.
Long line of people waiting in line for the tour so it took about 20 min. Guides only speak German so we had earphones to hear it in English; weird. Tour included chapel, torture chamber, dungeon, arsenal, belfry, royal apartment, fortress architectural history exhibit, Leonardo Da Vincie invention museum very interesting.
Highlight of the Castle was going up into the Bell Tower; however, there were lots of steps to climb to the different levels. Impressive 360o views of the mountains and looking down at Castle Square!

The movie "Where Eagles Dare" with Clint Eastwood was filmed here. This tour is supposed to take you back to the Middle Ages, but it seemed more like a Disney World attraction. Very similar to other medieval castles we visited. Not worth the 2.5 hours we spent here.
More winding, curvy roads up and down the mountains from Werfen through the pretty towns of Saalfelden and Imlau. Found a pullover spot to have a picnic lunch in this very scenic area.
ZELL AM SEE - Hotel Neue Post. Nice lady at desk gave us maps and booklets for the area. Beautiful lobby, pool, garden area.

Room was small; very clean; sheets a bit rough; shower had walls that fold out; no air, which we did not need since it's cold. Glad we are here only for a night.

Raining pretty hard so went next door to Zum Casar for dinner. There was a walkway through hotel so didn't even get wet. After dinner, checked out the big tent that was set up nearby. Motor cross was supposed to start, but they canceled because of the bad weather predicted for the next several days. Sure didn't like to hear that.
