Yay! We are back in civilisation!!
Malaysia's capital, affectionately known as KL, is every inch the Asian cyber-city
. Historic temples and mosques rub shoulders with steel-clad towers and pristine shopping malls; traders’ stalls are piled high with pungent durians and counterfeit DVDs; and locals sip cappuccinos in wifi-enabled coffee shops or feast at bustling street-side hawker stalls serving food from across the continent.
For us though, the most striking thing about this 21st century metropolis is its remarkable cultural diversity. Native Malays, Chinese prospectors, Indian migrants and British colonials all helped shape this city, and each group has left its indelible mark. But it's more than the extraordinary mix of architectural styles and cuisine. You only need to walk down the street to appreciate how ethnically tolerant this city is: the juxtaposition of Muslims in hijabs (headscarfs) walking passed Chinese in too-mini miniskirts is an eye-opener. But then, it's also not uncommon here to see women in Burkhas modelling Jimmy Choo bags.
Still, food and architecture definitely deserves a nod of appreciation. There really is no stopping this city as it races into the future: anchoring the huge Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) urban development are the sparkling 88-story Petronas Twin Towers. A visit to KL just isn’t complete unless you’ve been here -- there are great burgers in the mall's food court!
...And the view from the sky bridge is not bad either.
