It's been a long and intense basketball season, and after attending the Australian Boomers Vs USA Basketball game at Marvel Stadium on Thursday along with another 51216 fans, it was with great expectations that we headed off on annual our post-season trip.
Just after 8:15am we left home and in no time we were crossing Lake Eildon at Bonnie Doon and there was probably more fog floating along the valley than water.
We crossed the Vic/NSW border and stopped at Corowa for some lunch and to refuel the Territory. The Corowa Bakery was doing a brisk trade and after sampling their pasties and a couple of cakes, we could see why. We're sure this will be just the first of many bakery stops during this trip!
Just after 2:30pm we pulled into the Lockhart Caravan Park. We have been to Lockhart before, but just for a brief stop on the way to Cowra on a previous trip. That stop was memorable as I spiked a tyre on the van when I parked too close to the old blue stone curb.
There is an incredible amount of public art on display around Lockhart and entering the caravan park we were greeted by the Bunyip of Barra Creek. We think they must rotate the display of art at this location because unlike at other of the town's art installations, there is no storyboard here and we've seen historical photos where at this spot there was a sculpture of magpies, a horse, etc..
The caravan park is adjacent to the Brookong Creek and another artwork, The Mob, depicts a mob of kangaroos hopping alongside the Creek. In a connection to Brookong, another artwork represents the 9 shearers imprisoned with hard labour following the 1888 Brookong Station Shearer's Riot between shearers and the pastoralist "wool kings".
After setting the van up and paying the $24 site fees using the honesty box, we walked up to Lockhart's main street, Green Street, where it can be seen why Lockhart's claim itself as "The Verandah Town". The Blue Bird Cafe has obviously been an icon in the town, but it's no longer operating.
We saw many of the artworks on our previous visit, but the water tower art was completed after our last visit. It was created by artists, Scott Nagy and Janne Birkner (Krimsone) and covers a surface area of more than 600m2. It was created freehand using spray cans in natural hues to complement the Lockhart streetscape and to harmonise with the natural environment.
It includes a rosella, willy wag tails, a kookaburra and magpies on the main part of the tower, with soaring brolgas at the top of the tower. A possum, echidna and kangaroos are also depicted in their natural habitats at the bottom of the tower.
Walking back to the caravan park we bought a salad and some bananas from IGA. The Thai salad was a great accompaniment to our pork schnitzels for dinner. A banana followed by a cup of tea and a piece of Lucinda's traditional caravan trip slice (flavor this trip is orange) rounded out our first evening meal on the road.
