A quiet day around Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln, South Australia, Australia
After yesterday's long travel day, we planned today as a quiet day and that began with getting out of bed relatively late. With the sun shinning and a gentle breeze, Lucinda decided it was a perfect day to do some washing and it seemed most other women in the caravan park had the same idea!

'Fred' advertised a relaxing cruise on his electric boat the 'Tesla' around the wharf and marina in a tourist brochure we'd picked up and that seemed a good fit with the theme of our day . So after a ham and cheese lunch in the van we drove down to the wharf ready to board at 2:00pm.

2:00pm came and went and the other couple there to take the cruise also wondered where Fred was. A phone call to the cruise office managed to find Fred and he arrived half an hour late in his little boat. And it was relaxing as we motored slowly and quietly under electric power while Fred told us about the history and workings of the seafood trade, particularly the Southern Bluefin tuna and prawn industry.

Of particular interest was the MFV Tacoma. The name Tacoma indicates the boat's heritage, being built from plans sourced from a company in the USA by the three Haldane brothers in Port Fairy and launched there in 1951. Shortly after it was sailed by the trio, with their entire families onboard, to Port Lincoln, arriving on the morning of the 18th January 1952. So began the tuna industry on its long journey.

Then Fred took us past waterfront houses of the rich and famous, most with very large, luxury boats moored in front of them, which apparently get little use!

After completing the cruise we had a milkshake from Wendy's and walked along the foreshore where there is a statue of Makybe Diva, a horse owned by local tuna baron Tony Santic which won three consecutive Melbourne Cups (2003, 2004, and 2005). The life size statue was made by local artist Ken Martin who took 9 months, working 7 days per week, using some 5000kg of plasticine on a steel frame which was then bronzed.

Dinner was chicken in filo pastry with vegetables, one of which was purple carrot! No need to say that the chicken was baked in the Weber.
