Today was pretty much just a travel day. For the third consecutive day the forecast temperatures along our route exceeded 40degC. The Renmark caravan park provided a pleasant overnight location with a river view and we took advantage of the air-conditioned TV room to watch a bit of the World Cup cricket (Australia Vs England).
With Mildura not too far away we didn't rush the pack up, but did observe some campers who had obviously been at the caravan park for the weekend. Particularly one family that had a camper trailer plus tent. With all of the gear they had with them and the time involved to pack it up, we wondered if it felt like a holiday!
That got us thinking about some other travellers we'd seen on our travels. We have been surprised by the number of caravanners travelling with pets, particularly large dogs. But the award to strangest travelling pet goes to a parrot which sat on its owner's shoulder as he moved around the park. He actually spoke to us, the owner not the parrot, as he was interested in buying an Adria and wanted our comments.
But speaking of talking birds there was a cockatoo in a cage on site besides us at Port Lincoln and that did talk a bit.
So after fueling up in Renmark we headed toward Mildura and that required us to cross an opening bridge just out of Renmark. We were in quite a queue waiting for it to open for road traffic. Looking back across the river flats you could see how easily it would be for much of the land to be flooded as the river level rose - something I suppose more controlled with all of the weirs now in place on the Murray.
Being outbound from the Riverland we didn't have to stop at the quarantine checkpoint, but we did have some fruit and vegetables we had to dump approaching the Victorian exclusion zone.
Arriving at Mildura the temperature was around 44degC and we were able to select our preferred site to maximise the shade. It was too hot to get out and about, except to buy some groceries and some ice cold bottles of cider to quench our thirsts. Dinner was a simple cheese and ham omelette with a strawberry cheesecake for dessert. We had the air-conditioner on for most of the night to try and get some sleep.
