Yes, this is the real name of a real town in New Mexico. Another southwestern town with another quirky story!
The town officially changed its name from Hot Springs in March of 1950 when the host of the Truth or Consequences radio show, Ralph Edwards, said he would broadcast the 10th anniversary edition of the show from whatever town changed its name to Truth or Consequences first. Hot Springs, NM, rushed to comply, and Edwards broadcast from there on March 31, 1950. He also visited the town every May for the next 50 years, and in so doing spawned a festival called Fiesta, which is celebrated to this day in Ralph Edwards Park in Truth or Consequences. Don't believe me? Read all about it here.
And if you remember the game show, you are showing your age.
I've split today's adventures into three separate blog entries because there are three spots which totally deserve a pin in the map! We stopped here, in Truth or Consquences, for a break about halfway through our four-hour drive this morning. Check out the Halloween decorations at the Chevron station. You definitely need sound.
