Day 4: Quirks of the Brier (and just Canada)

Tuesday, March 05, 2019
Brandon, Manitoba, Canada
First:  I am NOT enamored of the traffic lights here.  They are worse than in Richmond, and I did not think that was possible.  It takes me nearly 30 minutes from my hotel room to my seat in the Keystone Centre, and it's 4 miles.  Some of that is dawdling drivers, some of that is the fact that it's all surface streets, and the rest is down to the endless traffic lights.
Secondly: I don't get the crowd dynamic.  Nobody pays any attention to where they are relative to anyone else.  They form big crowds--8-12 people--and just stand around drinking in the middle of the promenade.  Anyone trying to get to the bathrooms or food stands just has to weave and elbow and say excuse me 100 times. These mobs think nothing of blocking the tops of the staircases down to the seats.  Truly perplexing.
Thirdly, the camera panning through the crowd and putting people on the jumbotron is WAY more interesting to the crowd than the games are.  They will gladly miss the big shot at the end of the match to find out if those two people on "hug cam" will hug.
Other oddities documented in photos.  See captions.
Tomorrow I'm reversing my schedule--going in for the morning draw and coming back after the 2:00 draw.  I have to pack up my stuff to get ready to change hotels, for one thing, but I also want to see what the place is like in the morning.  There might not be any more morning draws after tomorrow: if there are tie-breakers, there will be; otherwise, not.
