We had a good plan for today. We would get up at a reasonable time, struggle to control ourselves at breakfast, stop by the local rental car branch to address a couple of minor issues, and then leave Eilat around 11:00. This would allow us to get to our next stop, Be'er Sheva, in
time to look around Tel Be'er Sheva, an archaeological site occupied off and on from the fourth millennium BCE. We did manage to get up at a reasonable time and, though we lost the battle with breakfast (our willpower failed us again), we left the hotel only a little behind schedule. Unfortunately Google placed the rental car office about a half kilometer from its actual location causing significant delay to sort that out. When we finally found it, we easily remedied the "low battery" alert we had been
getting for the key fob with a new battery. However, the "low tire pressure" warning we had seen a couple of days ago was not to be resolved by a simple blast of air to all the tires. The agent pointed to one of the rear tires, which had rotated to a stop showing a perfectly placed nail embedded at the top, and said "you have a nail; you have to get this fixed". Forty-five minutes and $15 later, we were finished at the nice tire shop and on our way.
Between waiting for the tire shop to fix the tire and getting gas (gas in Eilat is far cheaper than any we have seen elsewhere in Israel, we think because it is a free trade zone and the usual
taxes do not apply), we did not leave the city until about 12:30. We had a nice drive through the Negev Desert and, though we did not even stop for lunch, we still only arrived at Tel Be'er Sheva at 3:30, after they had stopped allowing entry for the day. Oh, and it was raining. The upshot of this is that we found our AirBnB (which looked pretty run-down on the outside but was nicely remodeled inside), ate the leftover sandwich that was intended for lunch, drank our last two Hatch beers, and went to bed early to prepare for a morning visit to the Tel.
