Sofia, Bulgaria
Lozenetz:
The whole month I spent in Sofia I stayed at one of the prettiest and most popular areas of the city where most Embassies are based, -an area with several new luxury apartments .Lozenetz is a ten minute walk to the City Centre.
The Farmers' Market:
I had the opportunity to visit just one 'Farmers’ market’ –the one at the Rimska Stena market in the district where I was staying.
(Open from 11:00 to 15:00) every Saturday.
The market is a great place in the city center, where organic farmers meet their customers face to face.
We arrived a little bit after 13:00, and there were already empty shelves and queues, but relaxed and friendly faces. The customers were mostly young between 25 and 35 years old.
One of the replies I got after asking a local about the produce and how people in general prefer this kind of markets, I got the following answer .
"Many people start to pay attention to their diet and food they buy after the appearance of a little boy or girl in the family.
People come here seeking the taste of food, they remember from their childhood. It’s a taste you can’t find in the supermarket."
On the market you can find not only fresh vegetables and other products, but also cooked and ready for consumption food.
I tried very delicious veggie balls, prepared for the market day and bought myself a couple of home-made jars of excellent quality of pepper sauce.
A Market Worth Visiting:
What makes this market worth visiting is the contact with the producers and the vivid meetings in the first place.
Here you can talk to the farmers and learn how your food has been produced .
Not all the food is organically certified of course, but it is produced with respect to the environment.
The atmosphere in general is friendly, the customers come back for more delicious food and after a couple of meetings consumers and farmers become friends.
