Sofia, Bulgaria
Neo-Classical Baroque:
If I knew the language I would definitely arrange to watch a play in this impressive Theatre . The doors were closed when I dropped by, curious to see the interior at least!
It is one of the most ornate buildings in Sofia, built in 1907 by the Austrian architects Helmer & Felner. (Austrian Neo-baroque style)
Although the interior was destroyed by fire in 1923 it was restored again six years later increasing the theatres seating capacity to over 1.000.
Style Splendour!
The 40 metre high façade is fronted by a large pediment, supported on 6 white marble columns and it is way too impressive and depicts the god Apollo and the muses. The twin towers that rise up behind are crowned with sculptures of the goddess Nike.
To the sides, two towers rise up, topped by sculpture complexes of figures on chariots. I have read that the foyers are ornamented with over 2.000 baroque elements.
Perhaps on my coming visit I will have the opportunity to enter the building and definitely take some photos of the interior as well.
