Mumbai (Bombay), Maharashtra, India
In this sojourn, I've stayed for the night in a number of places – camps, villages, hotels ; in towns, in villages, in the middle of nowhere. There has been one common theme, wherever I’ve been. As I left , somebody would wish me safe travels or come again, or thank you for staying with us, or some such equivalent. And then the last word always was, sir please drop a comment on Tripadvisor ! or if you prefer, Tripadvisor mein comment zaroor karna ! The housekeeping boy in Hodka village, who didn’t know how to operate a computer was saying, sir bhoolna math; Tripadvisor ….. !!

The travel industry is obsessed with Tripadvisor. At least in 4 places they proudly announced that they were No 1 on Tripadvisor beating some national and global chains. Every day, even in poor connectivity areas, they check if somebody has posted a comment for them. I told them Tripadvisor was always for me, one of the basis for choice, but not the only one. Location, price and website were equally important. But they said I was an exception. Everybody books on the basis of Tripadvisor it seems. Yes, the internet has truly revolutionalised lives even in Hodka village.

Left Ahmedabad and reached Bombay today. Long drive, especially the mess of getting into Mumbai. Having dinner with two gorgeous ladies, so it was worth all that mayhem !!

yes trip advisor and even lonely planet are travel guides many travelers refer to. but one cannot treat it as authentic since different people have different tastes. For instance, not many appreciate eco-tourism or adventure tourism. Some may like the local food some may not.

While Technology is a reliable source for getting information / reveiws about anything and evertyhing, nothing beats feedback from our human interaction. I am not against any of those sites that takes feedback, but again our own discretion is important. what say folks?
And you are back to square one - no pictures :-( anyway no complaining at all... you have given all of us more than what we asked for. :-)
Hope you had a great time at Mumbai!!

@Asha - Absolutely correct. You don't know what standards the reviewer is judging by. Still, the common themes of the various reviews are useful.

@Vincy - Totally agree on the wise use of technology. And yes - back to no pictures; last few days was just driving to get back home, so nothing worthwhile to click. The backsides of trucks, which is what has been in sight the most does not make for appealing photography :):)

mobile and internet are game changers today for India. the reach they provide is amazing. i still feel, most indian companies are reacting very slowly to this - still trying to address this channel in traditiona ways, though companies like trip advisor have caught on dynamically. i dont know, if it is a bad idea to sell on internet with a cash on delivery option to sell soaps into Hodka Village. dont know.

@Sandhya - How much connectivity has changed lives everywhere is simply amazing.90% for the good, but also 10% for the bad - the NSA, the complete destroying of privacy, etc
