Pilgrimage to the Mahatma's birth place

Porbandar, Gujarat, India
I had read on the Internet that Kirti Mandir is no longer well known or well visited these days. I am delighted to report that this isn't true at all (serves me right for believing everything out there). The birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi is finely kept and well visited. It has to be , shouldn't it ? A form of pilgrimage, for he was one of the greatest human beings who ever was.

The lane is a busy cramped lane. Porbandar is a quintessential small Indian town - cramped, narrow roads, two wheelers all around. As is typical in India - there are no signposts directing you to Kirti Mandir, but there are a million people to ask, and you can get there eventually.

It was an experience. To the strains of Vaishnava Janato, being played in the background, I walked around the place. Thankfully its totally non commercial - nobody selling T shirts or trinkets. I was delighted to see Indians from all corners of the country and of all ages visiting.

For once I won't say much and let the photos do a bit of the talking (also thereby proving that I am taking some photos !). A moment like a visit to Kirti Mandir must be experienced with thoughts and not words.

Wow! could empathize with what you feel at such places. BTW, do they have a visitors diary where you mark your thoughts and visit?

@Asha - I am sure they do, but never ventured to ask. I was touched to see how much so many people revered the man. I thought his hold had gone, but I was delighted to be proved wrong.
