No door knobs

Marsala, Sicily, Italy
Leaving Agrigento this morning, we travelled along the coast to Marsala (the most western point of Sicily). Our first stop was at the fishing port of Sciacca. We actually arrived while the shops were still open and not closed for siesta. Sciacca is the ceramic/pottery capital of Sicily so I held out great hopes that I would find my door knobs. Sciacca is a lovely town and well worth a stay but went off my list of places to return to on my next visit to Sicily because I did not find any door knobs despite the very many ceramic shops. I will just have to go back to Florence.

Still hugging the coast, we stopped for lunch at Vittorio's restaurant in Porto Palo - the same restaurant that featured in the TV series, "Sicily Unpacked" . Everyone was very excited about going to this restaurant for lunch because they had all watched the series and the episode that featured Vittorio. I couldn't share in their enthusiasm because I had never watched the program. As this was a seafood restaurant, a meat dish (veal) was prepared for me. It was a tough as old boot strap.

There were extensive bicycle paths around Porto Palo and the scenery was breathtaking all the way.

Baguio Onto Resort and Wines (our stay for the next 3 nights) was originally a fortified feudal dwelling, dating back to the 18th century. It sits on top of a hill overlooking grape vines and olive groves and views of the Mediterranean Sea and the 3 islands just off the Sicilian coast that make up the Egadi Islands. [We take a cruise around these islands on Friday.] It is situated exactly half way between the towns of Marsala (an old Arab town famous for its dessert wine, Marsala) and Trapani.

Baglio Oneto has definitely been added to my list of places to stay on my next visit to Sicily. It was a fortified feudal dwelling that is now an elegant and charming resort with extensive grounds. Unlike most hotels in Europe, it has coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms. It's just a beautiful place.
