Tour day 15 - back to Delhi

Delhi, India
In the morning Ken went up to the roof to look around. In the distance the domes of the Taj Mahal were visible over the trees, and the sky was filled with hot-air balloons. The driver later told us that seeing the Taj from the air is a 'thing' and that tourists like us will pay big bucks for the experience.

After breakfast we packed up and left at about 10 am. Took an hour to get out of Agra in heavy traffic. We were hoping to get money on the way out of town, but couldn't. We stopped at a currency exchange place that the driver said can give us a cash advance on a credit card, but their credit card machine was down. We also considered stopping at a bank / ATM, but the line ups were ridiculous. In fact we passed one bank where the lie was so long that it actually blocked one side of a two-lane road, and all the cars (our's included) had to switch over and drive down the wrong side to get past.

Stopped in Mathura to try ATMs along the highway.

First two were empty, but our driver talked to one guy on a moped and learned that there was an ATM in town with money. We drove there to have a look. The deadline for turning in the old 500 and 1000 rupee notes was getting close, so there was a long line at the bank.

But the line for the ATM wasn't as bad. Heather got in the ladies line, which was quite short. Whenever anyone approached the front of the line at either the ATM or the bank, there would be a lot of shouting from everyone in line behind. (Even if all that person wanted to do was have a quick word with his wife, as Ken found out.) After about 15 minutes Heather got in and was able to get 8000 rupees. Yay!

Along the highway to Delhi we saw many of the usual Indian sights like fancy decorated trucks and mud pies laid out in the sun to dry. (To be strictly correct, these are poop pies, not mud pies. When dry they will be burned for cooking fires.)

We also saw a new one...three guys driving a truck frame down the highway, with no box and no cab. This cannot be safe.

As we approached Delhi the traffic got bad again long before we got to the city. To make matters worse, there was construction going on for miles and miles as they were working on an extension of the metro line.

It took about two more hours to get into Delhi and to our hotel. As we pulled up, our driver, Mr Guru said "Sir, your hotel.", just as he has done after every leg of the trip. We were sad because we are going to miss him. How he got us through all the craziness of a two week road trip in Rajasthan in one piece we don't know, but we are grateful!

Again, we were tired after a long drive so we just hung out at the hotel. Heather ordered yummy Indian food from room service while Ken walked to the nearby beer store. Ate in room and went to bed early.
