Las Médulas, Castilla y León, Spain and Canary Islands

Decided to have a fluffy towel stop and found a rustic hotel in Orellan near to Las Medulas. Rustic and hearty evening meal of local food. Las Medulas is what remains of a colossal Roman gold mine from 1st and 2nd centuries dug into the sandstone rocks. The mines were the most important gold mines in the Roman Empire yielding 6,500kg of gold per year. We were able to look down onto the mines from near our hotel and also walked around the next day. It is now farmed with sweet chestnut trees
