Isabela, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The 5 hour hike up the Sierra Negra Volcano was an option that David chose. He seemed really keen to do this and so got up early and went off to meet the rest of the group. The way up was quite spectacular but a bit tiring.

The following background information is from the Galapagos Conservancy.

The guide picked David up from our hotel around 8:00 am. Then thye began the excursion to the Sierra Negra Volcano, located 13 miles from Puerto Villamil. After an invigorating hike, the group arrived at the caldera of Sierra Negra, which boasts the world’s second largest volcanic crater measuring 6 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep. It was quite a long hike up to the top.

Some background information: the volcano erupted on 2005, The lava flowed from the crater at a speed of 20 meters per second. Lava flowed for a distance of 800 m in channels up to 50 m wide. The lava from the eruption covered about 14 sq km of the caldera floor.

The group then continued their hike to Volcan Chico, where fumarole activity was abundant and the views spectacular. It had rained and coming back down was very slippery and muddy but David made it.
