Isabela, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

This tour was recommended by Jessy and turned out to be a highpoint of our whole trip to the Galapagos. It is one of the best places for snorkeling in the Galapagos. To get there means another boat ride but as we went with Mowgli's Tours, this was no problem. Both the boat and crew were excellent. As we went along, the crew asked if anyone wanted to fish off the boat. I was eager to try but worried if fishing was allowed. I later found out that the site is accessible only by special permit given exclusively to local fisherman. We caught a beautiful yellow-finned tuna, which I really wanted to throw back. But, of course, to a fisherman, this is not what you do with fish. There was some talk about getting together for a fish bake later, but it turned out that this was not that kind of group. I imagined the crew sold it or enjoyed it themselves.

On the way you pass La Union Rock, an enormous monolith rising out of the water with massive waves breaking against it.

Once there it could great skill on the part of the crew to get the boat into the area of the tunnels. However, they were experts and were were soon ready to start exploring.

The landscape is incredible, with lava tunnels and bridges and clear water that allows you to see sea turtles swimming by as well as other animals. It is an amazing place. It was formed when hot magma from the volcanoes reached the sea and cooled quickly forming a series of rock formations including bridges and of course the tunnels that give the site its name. You can see green sea turtles swimming by as you stand on the rocks.

Everyone wanted to make sure the day would be a success and helped everyone have a great snorkeling experience. (I needed a bit of help getting through the tunnels and both the guide and a crew member were immediately there to help.) We also had an amazing manta ray experience with the boat bringing us as close as possible to the manta ray so that people could swim with it. If you go to Isabela Island, don't miss this opportunity.
