Day 2 - Gundagai to Beechworth

Beechworth, Victoria, Australia
Woke up to a lovely sunny day in Gundagai. Visited our favourite cafe for breakfast and coffee and hit the road to Chiltern - our mission was to spot a Regent Honeyeater. Regent Honeyeaters are extremely endangered. There are estimated to be less than 500 left in the wild but some breeding programs by Taronga Zoo has released them in the Chiltern area and lately there have been sightings in the area.

Got to Chiltern around lunchtime and had some burgers for lunch. We asked a few locals about the birds but only the volunteers at the visitors centre knew anything. We followed their directions and visited a few bird areas but we didn't see any Regent Honeyeaters in the end so we jumped back onto the freeway and started to ponder where we were going to pull the campervan in for the night.

It started getting dark around 5pm so we dropped in to the highly recommended Beechworth for the night. We drove into town and were quite impressed by the plane trees losing their leaves. We dropped into the supermarket to grab some supplies then found the most amazing campsite by the town lake. We set up camp in the unpowered area as there was only one other caravan there.

We fired up the internet, watched some TV then cooked our dinner. My schnitzel was just starting to show signs of being cooked when we ran out of gas. Luckily Julie was only toasting bread for her salad and my schnitzel was cooked enough to be free of salmonella so we still managed to have dinner.
