Day 6 - Sorrento & Portsea areas

Sorrento, Victoria, Australia
The original plan was to drive straight onto the ferry at Sorrento so we could get to the Great Ocean Rd but once we started exploring around Portsea and Sorrento we thought we might have to stay in the area another day. Once we saw the waterfront camping we were glad we stayed.

We got some takeaway coffee and went for a walk for a few kms at the Point at the end of Portsea . Then we went down to the beach and inspected the caves and rocks. We couldn't help but wonder if Harold Holt was about to wash up. They area in which we were walking was pretty much where he disappeared from.

London Bridge (#1) was a nice spot to take some photos. We were photographing the cave tunnel when a 20-30cm vertical object began to slice through the water towards us. Next thing, a guy in a wetsuit popped up carrying a small net. We said hello and had a quick chat. He had gone in the watr to catch abalone. Apparently they aren't too far down. He said he was just taking a few for his family for lunch. There were also a family of sooty oystercatchers sharing the beach with us so we made sure not to to disturb them too much.

After this, it was time to find a spot at the local camping area. Again, it was beachfront, but this time the place was empty apart from a few old folk with their caravans virtually parked inside the toilet block . We found an absolutely bangin' campsite overlooking the shoreline. Pure NW facing waterview - 180 degrees! It was decided that we would stick around for the next few hours and have a snack then we would cycle to dinner after sunset.

It was a pleasant spot to relax and take it all in but as usual, time flew and next thing we knew we were unloading the bikes for the 5km ride to dinner. The temperature had dropped quite a bit to about 12 degrees so we donned the jackets. Darkness fell pretty quick so we had to use the LED headtorches from the camper which wasn't too comfortable with my helmet trying to push down on it. We made it to Sorrento and went to the Italian place up the top of the main drag. I think it was La Porchetta. The garlic bread was huge and almost filled us up. When our pastas came we couldn't finish them so we had to pack them up and bring them back to the van.

The bike ride back was bloody cold. The temperature has dropped to about 10 degrees and we only had jeans and t-shirts with light jumpers on. We had to deliberately seek out a hill or two to warm us up and then we were back. The first thing on the agenda was to take the 400m walk to the shower block to get clean and pyjamarised. Back at the van we had a cup of tea and relaxed for a while until carking it. TV and internet signals were full strength here as well.

Happy Birthday Kristian!
