The Clock (Thailand)

Chiang Rai Province, Thailand
Glittering in the Thailand sun is the golden clock. It sits in the middle of town and creates a round-about for the busy street. Spirals point upward into the sky. At night the clock is transformed into a dazzling light show. Music plays and the towers animations come to life, as the music loudly plays. People sit at the sidewalk cafes or stand in the streets to watch the 10 minute light show.

After walking around the night market for a while, I wandered up the street, for no particular reason . I had passed the clock in the daytime and took a photo or two of it. I didn't think anymore about it.

Tonight, as I pass by, music begins to play. Then a glow surrounds the clock. Parts of the clock become animated, while the traffic continues to move around it. A laser light show, accompanied by music makes quiet a stir along the street. Tuk-tuks and motorbikes and cars and trucks continue their route around the clock. The show lasts for about 10 minutes.

The clock was designed by the same artist that built the White Temple. You can see some of the same designs in the clock, such as the twisted spirals and dragon-like creatures.

Like most tourists, I didn't know the clock put on this light show every night. It turns out the show is at 7, 8, and 9 p.m. nightly. I just happened on it by chance one night. I watched it twice while in Chiang Rai and mentioned it to other backpackers at the hostel. It seems for some reason it is not publicized that much, and a lot of visitors miss seeing it.
