The Glass Pagoda (Vietnam)

Dalat, Vietnam
The Linh Phuoc Pagoda is one of the most beautiful I have seen yet. Mr. Dung brought me here to see this mosaic glass covered Pagoda. Pieces of pottery, glass and porcelain pieces make up this building that was built starting in 1949 and finished in 1952. Other buildings have been added since.

I wish the photos would bring out the gleaming colors but photos are just not the same as the real thing . I would take photos from various angles, hoping the shining mosaics would show in the photo, but I don't think they did. What looks like painted walls and columns and ceilings are actually small pieces of shining tiles. I walked and looked and it kept roaming with staircases and rooms and views that were irresistible.

The front of the pagoda has lines of ornamental pillars that are shaped like flying dragons. A big Buddha, 4.8 meters tall sits among some relief art work. A dragon, 49 meters long, curls around near the pond. It is made with 12,000 empty bottles. The head of the dragon is 7m tall.

This pagoda is the highest bell tower in Vietnam. It is 38 meters high and holds a 4.3 meter, 8.5 ton bell. The detail in the bell is unbelievable.

As the bell turns, it shows images representing the 4 seasons. Tourists are invited to turn the bell to the current season, then write their wishes on a sheet of yellow paper. They then stick the piece of paper to the bell, chime the bell 3 times to send their prayers to Buddha. I didn't do it, but some were.

There is a tower in front that was made from thousands of pieces of broken bowls. I saw some workers sitting on the ground, hand-cutting pieces of tile and glass.

The pagoda is building new sections, so I guess the pieces are either for the new sections or maybe for maintenance on the current buildings.
