The Black Adderrrr....

Brampford Speke, England, United Kingdom
We went to the Tea Shop for breakfast. There was lovely bread, then our cooked breakfasts. Luckily Sue had forgotten to organise bowls for cereal as we could not have eaten it, as the cooked part was huge. It was a bit odd to eat breakfast in a shop but not unpleasant. She said this was a nicer summer than the last two which somewhat surprised us. However it was a nice warm morning with the sun shining.

However, we were only 1/4 of the way to Lands End when we were crawling along in fog . There had been a notice about an accident and we had also just passed one. The 2nd one was a car with an upturned caravan. The rest of the trip was fine when we were on dual carriageways but … there was a long stretch of single lane with a jam leading up to and roadworks later which had the same effect. Then the Penzance Fire Station was having a special open day. Our 2-3 hour journey took over 4.

We arrived to find that Lands End was as we had been warned. It not only had all the souvenir shops of John O'Groats it also had a number of 'attractions’. It also cost 4 pound to park. We had a snack, walked to the last House, took photos and left. This was definitely just ‘a tick the box’ visit. However, it is satisfying to say we have been to both ends of the UK. Our options may also have been affected by the weather. It was cloudy and windy although the wind was not as cold as in the North. It was a long way from a nice summers day.

We then drove to the small town of St Just and saw their claim to fame, a medieval outdoor theatre . There was a sign telling us it was called Plen an Gwary and used for the performance of Miracle Plays until the early 17th century. It is still in use as there was an ad for a performance of Midsummer’s Nights Dream in 2 weeks. Unfortunately I could not find the cache that lead us there.

We then found a couple of caches that took us for short walks, using the idea of caching to explore the area. The views would have been great but for the cloud, but at least it wasn’t raining, I did one on my own called ‘Birds of Prey’ as John was listening to the last of the cricket in the car. When I met him near the start of the track he asked if I had seen any adders. He then showed me the entrance sign. I had read the bit about keeping to the marked path because of old mine working but had skipped over the part about natural life. I already knew to look out for birds here. However, in bold at the bottom it read "Adders may be seen basking on the rocks and slithering in the undergrowth . They rarely bite BUT IF BITTEN YOU SHOULD SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION PROMPTLY". I thought about how I had reached under rocks looking for the cache.

We then tried to visit one of the seaside places, but the lack of parking drove us off. We did like the look of the area though. There was a foreshore walk and a number of fishing boats in the water, not that we had time to take photos.

At this stage the weather started to close in so we decided we would return. We stopped to do a couple of caches on the way back when we went though dry patches but we had mainly fog, showers and outright rain.

We will never know, but on reflection maybe we should have left this drive until Sunday or Monday. John did however want to go to Lands End and the previous day had only been a short drive. The poor weather was mainly while we were driving and while it was cold it did not rain while we were at Lands End . Also John had been able to listen to a lot of the cricket while in the car. When we got back to within 30 km of our BnB the sun was shining. We heard later that there had been no rain here today.

We had tea at the local pub. It is in the Good Pub Guide for 2010 we discovered when we arrived. It also said that reservations were recommended but luckily we were early enough at 7.30pm to get a table. The owners were very friendly, as was the pub cocker spaniel. The menu had a bold line on both sides asking people ‘not to feed Sam’, the dog. He had wonderfully plaintive eyes so he was hard to resist. Sue told us later that both chefs are very good which makes it easy for her to recommend the pub to guests. It is closed however on Monday and does not open Sunday evening so we won’t be able to revisit.

Both nights we have arrived back to find a light on in our room. At first we thought we had left one on by mistake but then we realised that Sue turns one on for us. It is a nice touch to arrive back with welcoming lights on. We also wake to the sound of billing and cooing because there is a birdbox outside with more birds than we can count. Today we saw 5 fly away then another 5 appear from inside.
