Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya
Here is the FOURTH of the;
'Uncle Shane Do You Eat Pigs Eyes, Chicken Feet & Bat Wings for Snax' entries.
Besides eating Insects, Dogs, Cats, Rats, Bats and anything else that once moved I sometimes manage to squeeze in some normalish snacks when I'm feeling a tad peckish.
Almost all of them are found on the typical Chinese three wheeler portable snack shop or eatery. For those who have never been any where in Asia this simply means a three wheeled bike that has been modified into some type of 'portable eatery'. Some can be found grouped together on the same corner most days and/or nights and others travel around the place from hour to hour to find where the hungriest crowds are.
Those who have been to China will understand when I say that food and eating is pretty much a HUGE part of the Chinese life style. For those who haven't visited China then there really isn't much I can say as unless you have been here it really is too hard to comprehend
What I mean by this is, I know you think you know how much they can eat!
But the fact is you really don't have any idea!
They spend hours preparing it and they then spend hours eating it.
What they do during the in between hours is the reason for this and the following blogs.
The Chinese simply snack!
Snacks are on every street corner of every city, town and village and don't even get me started on what can be found near bus or train stations and market places. After a huge meal that consists of about twenty courses and a billion bottles of beer, before heading to the next destination my friends will usually head for the nearest corner for snacks!
I can't do anything but simply shake my head in disbelief...it's all about SNAX!
TODAY
Today's menu of snax begins with some very delicious biscuit Snax.
From what I can gather they are made from chrysanthemum plant (I could be wrong though, I usually am!). I found them as I was walking around the cities smaller market road which is just around the corner from my school. They come in three sizes and each size offers a different taste. You can choose from sweet, salty or spicy.
I can never choose so I buy a mixed bag, race home, sit in the corner, rock back and forth and feast while laughing like a mad child!
Next is little Shaowu's latest taste sensation.
I call them Pizza Pockets but everyone else calls them a pizza for some unknown reason. But I must always remember that I grew up with all these new taste sensations China is now experiencing and as they are Chinese they will always see things differently than I. No matter what they are called things Pizza or Pizza Pockets are truly delicious! Like a normal pizza they come in a variety of different flavours ranging from different meats, eggs, fruit and then you can even add chocolate sauce etc and have another for sweets.
Why not, I do, they really are that yummy!
Look how happy they make Joyce and Canadian Rob!
And look at poor little Luo Wei!
She can't wait to taste hers!
Now for another staple food for the Chinese.
Bread, bread, bread and bread but not the same as out bread. You can now get bread the same as 'our' bread but it is usually sweetened. But we shall leave bread for another Snax Page. This bread though is one of my favourites. It is steamed and full of rice and little pieces of green vegetables.
An awesome snack when you are out walking and need a quick energy fix!
I had to add the next in, it was Rob's birthday last month and as we didn't do much for it I thought I'd add the cake in as a snack. In the end none of us ate it as he was taken out do dinner by several students' parents over several nights no one wanted to eat cake.
In the end he handed out to some of Canadian Jo's students.
Next are more of not only mine but everybody's favourite street snacks. I call these ones Spicy Street Snax. You can get them on any street corner and they are awesome! They are filled with lettuce, cabbage, carrot and taro and make another quick fix for an empty stomach.
Last of all is another bread snack but this one is a lot lighter than most bread snacks.
It is light and puffy and partially filled with chopped vegetables. These ones are not as common as most other street corner bread snacks but the two I know of are always in the same place so if it a light veggie bread I'm after then I know which lane way to take!
WALK-ABOUT PHOTOS
Today's Walk-about photos were taken while I was on a ride I don't seem to do much. Have no answer as to why I don't' ride that way much as it really is a beautiful bike ride. Probably as the road ends in a rice field and there is no other way to go except all the way back the same way which isn't so exciting after several rides.
How cute are the kids though!
And how cute are the dancing girls mate!
Better than chrysanthemum biscuits be them spicy, salty or sweet!
Beers N Noodles full of freaky snax toya.....shane

The soundtrack to this peckish entry was by a band I haven't heard in about ten years!
A band I used to love to listen to but I had them on LP and never found them on CD, therefore no MP3 to take with me. Several years ago when I was visiting a friend in Guigang City in Guangxi Province we were all at the local Bar and I got to chatting to a Canadian guy named Chris.
(You can find him here http://www.travelpod.com/members/yamahuh).
How great is it when you are in China and you find someone who is not only foreign and can understand you but also loves to listen to the same music as you. Needless to say we've stayed in contact ever since and have had a few big nights on MSN with a few too many beers.
Anyhow, one of the bands we both found we loved was a band called Kick Axe.
Some awesome 80's metal at its best! So to stop the story getting any longer I checked my email today and I found the album 'Welcome To The Club' sitting there waiting for me.
If the habits hard to break!
Welcome to the Club mate!
