Jeju : Phoenix Island, Dinner, Hotel

Jeju City, Jeju Island, South Korea
After our afternoon in Udo Island we drove to Phoenix Island. This is actually a luxury condo resort, not an island. Some famous tv/movie stars have apartments here, but you can still rent holiday homes here also. We were taken on a yellow buggy bus for a tour. This resort is the other side of sunrise peak (seongsan ichulbung) from Udo Island so you still have great views of the crater mountain.

We were taken to the 'agora' which is their health club in a glass pyramid shaped building . They had a gym and lots of private rooms with screen golf. Then we went to an art gallery complex. This building was designed and funded by a Japanese architect and made of local volcanic rock.

Inside there were three exhibits. The first was a projection screen showing a movie of leaves falling off a tree. The second was a dark circular room with a projection of the previous days sky on the ground. You are meant to reflect on your day and walk on a moving ball to follow your path. The third was a live broadcast of the sunrise peak crater across the waters. As it was now sunset it was a nice telecast.

To get to the museum we walked thru a passage thru two waterfalls on each side. We joked it was like the parting of the waves. At the end of the museum is also a lookout wall from which you can look at the sunrise peak crater. Again some great shots at sunset. As you walk downwards thru the high stone walls it does somewhat resemble a prison but was a pleasant surprise and something unexpected from my previous trip to jeju .

For dinner we then went back to a seafood restaurant in Jungmun. I had grilled mackerel and was given two large fish I think for 15,000w ($12). After we drove back to our hotel. Again this was a resort style hotel facing the ocean with lots of palm trees.

At this price range I would have expected a bit more. The hotel had an odd design with the reception on the third floor. The room itself was nice but not as large as the night before. There was no flat screen tv but a balcony overlooking the palm trees, garden, and ocean. Unfortunately it was night so I didnt see the ocean till the morning. The room also had a kitchenette but no crockery or cutlery.

The bathroom didnt have any slippers and there was water damage outside the door on the hardwood floor. When I had a shower the drain was closed and I couldnt open it . As the tub was starting to flood I had to stand in the bathroom floor and use the floor drain to shower. This overflowed into the living room which is how the water damage was being caused.

Othewise it was a nice hotel. I would have liked to have seen the grounds in the morning but we had a 7am check out for our flight to seoul.
