This afternoon I wanted to visit some museums as they are closed Mondays after the weekend. First I went to the National Museum at Republic Square. I was told I cant go in as its under renovation but I went in anyway.
Admission was 100D ($1.25) and was a waste as there was just an art display on one side of the floor and the rest of the building was closed. I was hoping to see something about the various people here thru the centuries, (Romans, Illyrians, Slavs, Hungarians, Austrians, Turkish, Socialists) but there was nothing. In Sarajevo they had lots of museums where I saw all of this so I expected it here too in the old Yugoslav capital.
After talking with the tourist office I got a bus card to visit some further museums. The card is 40D (.50 cents) and you load it with upto 10 trips costing 72D (.85 cents) each. I put five rides on there for a total of 400D ($4.50)
First I had to figure out where to board trolley bus 41 to take me to the Museum of Yugoslav History. The bus went down the middle lane so I didn't know where it would stop. I followed it backwards and eventually found the stop
I thought the Museum of Yugoslav History would be more of the post war socialist era. However, they said there were no exhibits except for some childrens art. Don't these people care about their history as I am yet to see a history museum in Belgrade
To the rear was the House of Flowers which is Tito's mausoleum. Entrance was 200D ($2.50). You first go thru a part setting with lots of statues. This leads to a brick building which looks like a community centre
Not much of a resting place but it had red drapes at the entrance. The interior was a indoor botanical garden with lots of greenery. To one side was an exhibition gallery
The gallery had lots of batons from the Yugoslav youth games which were held during Tito's rule. They also had pictures from his leadership and two of his uniforms.
In the middle of the greenery was a marble slab which was his resting place. On the way out was the old museum which had more cultural clothing, swords, guns, and rifles.
Taking the bus back I got off at a stop where there as a large building with damage from the Nato bombing at the end of the 1990s. So far I hadn't seen any war damage though I was expecting to see more. There were also soldiers with rifles patrolling here which seemed strange for a derelict building
Walking thru the rain which had been coming steady all day I made it to the Tesla Museum. It seems everyone is quite proud of this and is considered a must see location
Entrance was 500D ($6) which was more than double all the other museums. They also said the next tour was 4pm and it was only 3pm. I wasn't going to wait an hour and the museum didn't seem that big. I could already see both sides of the ground floor with electrical experiment displays
I was trying to find a big church I'd seen from the bus but couldn't find it. I was supposed to goto Zemun the Austrian settlement the other side of the Sava river with my bus card but the rain was so bad I decided to wait till tomorrow.
I wanted to find something warm to eat for my sore throat. So far I'd been eating pizza but I wanted warm food or soup. Next to a Turkish kebab place I was debating was a local burger place
They had a combo for 280D ($3.50) which came with fries and drink. When I tried ordering they said no fries or drink, so I said ok just for the warm sandwich. I had a choice or burger or cevapci which is a bosnian style mini grilled lamb kebabs
I went for the cevapci choice. When she served she said "please, Serbian speciality" and happily served my sandwich. When I finished she also asked if it was good so I gave her a thumbs up
The rain was really heavy now even though the forecast said it would be cloudy and sunny by the afternoon. I cancelled the rest of today and just went back to the hostel
