Back in Pristina I wanted to finish up a few more places I didn’t get to see on my first day. In the morning on the way to the bus terminal I already stopped by the sports centre which has the words ‘new born’ in large letters coloured with each of the flags that has recognized Kosovo.
The bus station is on Bill Clinton road who pushed for the Nato bombing campaign to stop the Serb aggression. There is now a statue of him with an American flag.
Nearby is George Bush St who was President when Kosovo declared itself independent and was one of the first countries to recognize Kosovo. With American approval this opened the way for most other countries to recognize them except for countries such as Spain that have their own separatist provinces so didn’t want to set a precedent
Near the start of George Bush St is a large church which again seemed to be closed. I’m not sure what the Christian population of the town is since the partition from Serbia.
This was opposite a park which had the university of Kosovo. This has been described as blocks of lego covered in chain mail. Its typical socialist era style modernist architecture. I went inside to look for the bathroom and its not actually that big for a national university.
Next door in the same park is the shell remain of an Orthodox church. I don’t know if the damage is recent from the breakup or if its much older than that.
Heading back to the old town I went up Mother Theresa Blvd which is a big new pedestrian avenue branching off from George Bush St and ending at the base of old town. This is a good smooth walk to go with when I have my luggage.
Back in old town I wanted to find the Turkish baths which I didn’t yesterday. After going in circles eventually I found it next to the Grand Mosque. The reason I didn’t see it is because they have added a new façade so until you notice the domes on top, partially hidden by the façade, you wont find it.
The last thing I wanted to find was a street with my name closeby. I ended up in the market which was much larger then yesterday. It twisted and turned and threw me out somewhere. I was trying to navigate myself but it was getting dark and there are no street names.
Eventually I figured my way back to where the street was supposed to be. Its actually in the middle of the market so not that easy to find, and then I had to look for a name sign to take a photo.
Back by the hotel I stopped by the bakery beside for some snacks. A guy wanted to know where I was from and didn’t like ‘Canada’ as an answer so I had to explain my parents are from Pakistan. Then he tried to ask me how I am in Urdu so I replied back and he was impressed, as was most of the bakery, that I can speak Urdu too. I was expecting applause the way the whole store was attentively listening
In the hotel wifi was down. This time its not my laptop as other people were having problems too. It’s a shame as this hotel had the strongest signal so far and I was able to upload some photo albums.
Tomorrow I am off to Skopje Macedonia. I really enjoyed my stay in Kosovo and wish I had planned it longer. I’m enjoying the Albanian music channels ranging from pop, to classical, and folk. They also have lots of Turkish tv channels here too.
