Serbian Dinner

Dubrovnik, Croatia
When we drove around Croatia yesterday, we were a stone's throw from the Serbian border and could see the village homes of Serbia just across the road. Tonight, we went into the Dubrovnik Old Town to the Taj Mahal for dinner, a Serbian restaurant that is highly recommended around here. What is Serbian food, we asked. Their cuisine specializes in grilled meats. It is a mixture of Mediterranean, Turkish, and Greek cuisines. Although we aren't familiar with Turkish cuisine, we did see both Mediterranean and Greek influences. The food was delicious and so plentiful that we have lunch for tomorrow. Cory ordered a sort of veal roulade with a stuffing of cheeses and minced vegetables called the Cheerful Serbian. He was pretty happy at the end of his meal! I ordered the house specialty. It was a phyllo dough wrapped mixture of grilled veal, cheeses, mushrooms and seasonings. Both meals came with a baked potato with a sauce that was reminiscent of Greek yogurt sauces with cucumber. They also served a basket of fresh-baked pita bread that was so good! We drank Serbian wine with dinner, Cory drank red and I had white. Altogether, this was a delightful and interesting meal and we'll certainly go back to Taj Mahal for another taste of Serbian food. The place was so popular that you need a reservation after 7 pm.

After dinner we walked around Old Town, watching the sun set and visiting the pier at the harbor for a Stracciatella ice cream cone . Yes, the food is very, very good in Dubrovnik!
