Borough Market and the City

London, England, United Kingdom
This past week we took the tube into the heart of London and visited the Borough Market. London is famous for its markets selling everything from antiques to clothing, food and wine. Here's a link to the top 12 markets in London and they include the Borough Market: http://www.visitlondon.com/things-to-do/shopping/market/londons-top-markets

Borough market is the gourmet food paradise of the world if you can manage to elbow the gawkers out of your way . There are over 100 stalls selling every sort of food imaginable and some I couldn't even wrap my head around eating. We bought salted beef (really corned beef to us Americans) sandwiches and a Pim's to sustain our wander through this busy and bustling market.

After our tour of the Borough market, we walked up Clink St where the old prison was located. This is where they got the phrase "in the clink" meaning in the prison on Clink St. Then, we headed up the Thames to the London Millennium Footbridge and crossed over to the City of London. The bridge is a remarkable suspension bridge for pedestrians only that links Bankside to the City proper. It was opened in 2000, so it's a fairly new addition to the city. On the Bankside of the bridge is the Old Globe theatre and St. Paul's cathedral is on the City side. The views from the center of the bridge are amazing, all up and down the river. We could see Tower Bridge and all the boats traveling the river.

Once we reached the city side of the Millennium bridge, we peeked into St. Paul's cathedral at its vast and marble interior. Having toured our fill of cathedrals in the past two years, we passed on a full tour, and wandered up the street to explore this area. The City of London is the area where the criminal and civil courts are located, Fleet Street, and the stock exchange. There's not much for a tourist to go into, other than the excellent pubs! So we checked into a pub for a while and then took the tube home.

Enjoy the pics!
