On the Road Again in Asia 2013-14

Kathmandu, Nepal
Well, I'm back on the road again and this time blogging to the world about it. This time it’s Asia again, probably the continent with the most to experience.

I took a few years off from blogging about my travels while staying closer to home in North America . I also failed to revive my blog on a recent trip through the Andean countries of South America. With a limited time on the road it seemed "why spend a lot of time in Internet cafes writing and uploading pictures rather than experiencing travel?" Well, as I discovered in South America, technology has changed travel greatly in the five or six years or so since I was last doing major globetrotting with Wi-Fi ubiquitous, smaller more portable devices available, and Internet cafes going the way of the horse-drawn carriage. So armed with my new tablet I’m ready to blog away while on trucks and trains and in my hotel room.

I prefer to use my travel blog mostly to display some of my photos, relate impressions of places I visit, and tell a few good stories of things that happen to me along the way. Despite being a serious nerd, I am not an authority on the places I’ll be visiting. Thus, I’ll generally avoid most facts and figures and historical details on the places I visit. Google and Wikipedia are at your fingertips for anything I mention that piques your interest for more detail. I also hope to avoid the very sequential accounts of experiences in some travel blogs that beg the question, “But when did you go to the bathroom”. And too much travel writing is highly cliché in which every place is overwhelmingly beautiful and every day is perfect bliss; unless you’re paying through the wazoo to be pampered at a five-star resort real travel doesn’t work that way. Many of the most memorable travel experiences are those from places that are far from perfect or when things don’t go perfectly as planned.

The Plan:

My plans are mostly set through June 10, 2014 and wide open afterwards. After a few days in the Kathmandu area of Nepal I have a nearly three month overland loop tour around India with Dragoman until nearly the end of February:

I am following that with a short trip in Bangladesh in the first half of March with Explore Worldwide:

To be followed by a three-week trip from March 15 through April 6 in Sri Lanka and the Maldives with Explore Worldwide:

After that I return to Nepal for a month between April 9 and May 10 during which time I intend to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek and visit some nearby parts of Nepal including Lumbini and Pokhara. I anticipate doing the trek independently, possibly with a friend or two joining me.

The last part of my planned itinerary is another overland trip with Dragoman from Kathmandu, Nepal to Xian, China via Tibet from May 11 through June 10.

After that things are wide open. Six and a half months on the road will have been longer than I have traveled before and I may be ready to give up my nomadism or work may read its ugly head again with some lucrative contract work to return to. Or I may continue onwards for up to six more months in Asia with some less frequented parts of northern China, then Indonesia and Malaysia, and finally Korea, Japan, and Taiwan on my mind as likely destinations.

Sound interesting? If so, let me know? I am always looking, usually unsuccessfully for a good travel partner or a friend to join me in my travels.
