Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, IndiaThe UNESCO World Heritage listed temples at Khajuraho are considered one of finest examples of Hindu temple art . The stonework tells a fantastic artistic story of life in India about a millennium ago, with temples built at different times between 900 and 1050 A.D. The carvings show scenes of war and daily life and include depictions of the Gods. Although only a small part of the total artwork at the site, Khajuraho is best known for graphic depictions of erotica – orgies, group sex, bestiality, and couples and groups in every possible sexual pose.
There’s some uncertainty about the significance of erotic carvings and whether they have any connection to the Kamasutra. Other theories are that they demonstrate virility and thus the power of rulers or that they may have possibly included to appease evil spirits.
Our slow-paced relaxing day visiting Khajuraho was sandwiched between two fairly long drive days from Bandhavgarh and onwards to Agra. We camped two nights at Ken River Lodge, a quiet campground adjacent to the lodge overlooking the river. Sitting around the campfire in the lodge’s courtyard turned into a big drinking night as the booze pours on the mixed drinks became ever more generous as the night went on. The booze balances off the low-cal mostly vegetarian meals; if only I could give up beer for a while I could get so lean!
