Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India
Jodhpur is another of Rajasthan famous fortress cities in the desert. It is nicknamed the Blue City of Rajasthan because of the color most houses in some of its neighborhoods are painted. Blue houses are apparently typical of the Brahman priestly caste in some parts of India and are said to deter the presence of mosquitos. They create a unique vista of the city from higher viewpoints.

Jodhpur's main sight is the spectacular Merangarh Fortress perched about 150 meters above the center of the city . Unlike some other palaces and fortresses in Rajasthan, Merangarh is no longer inhabited and is now entirely a museum. There are a few other minor sights in Jodhpur, but Merangarh is the main one. After a few hours in the fortress museum, guided around by a very nice included audio headset rather than noisy human guides, I went down to the busy city center and Sardar Market surrounding a century-old clock tower, the city's other notable monument.

Our group spent, oddly enough one night in each of two different places. The first was at Durag Niwas Guest House, a backpacker friendly place southeast of center where the owner put on an Indian cooking demonstration for us. For our second night we moved to several private homes for a homestay with an Indian family. The owner of the house (in reality probably more of a bed and breakfast inn than a true stay in someone's house) I stayed in was a retired Indian naval officer. Their servants put on some major dinner and breakfast feasts and the en-suite bathroom in my room was one of the largest and most marbley I've had in any hotel, India or elsewhere in the world.
