Thar Desert Camel Trek

Muhār, Rajasthan, India
What would a trip to the Thar Desert be without going on a camel trek? Yes, it was a must-do activity included in my trip, but not all that exciting for me since I've been on camels before, both kinds even - the one-hump Dromedaries in Egypt and Jordan and the two-hump Bactrian version in Mongolia.

We went from Jaisalmer in Jeeps to a rare spot in the desert about 30 miles west in the direction of Pakistan where there is a small region of sand dunes, a rarity in the That desert ad enough of a novelty that the dunes are overrun with well off Indians in Jeeps and on quad bikes trying to get their desert experience on . We rode our camels through the dunes for about an hour to a spot chosen for our campsite that was easily accessible for the Jeeps to bring us our sleeping gear, food and drink for the night, and all the other comforts of car camping.

So what is there to do for the rest of the evening when dropped off in the middle of sand dunes in the late afternoon? Not much except for drinking whiskey and eating some of Jaisalmer's famous bhang cookies while sitting around a campfire and watching a local music and dance performance.

By morning my sleeping bag and clothes were full of sand since I rolled off my mattress and down a sand dune at some point during the night. Then it was time for breakfast, packing our stuff back onto the Jeeps, and riding our camels in painful hungover state for 45 minutes back to our starting point along the main road.
