Friday- Thursday night I did some research and decided where I wanted to visit on the Jurassic Coast of East Devon and Dorset. This is the area where the show Broadchurch was filmed. As I was putting away my papers I happened to notice that I marked on a map that the Clapp family had come from the west end of this area in the early 1600's. Change of plans. I headed to Sidmouth, touristy like Door County or other US coastal cities. I did find some sand for my collection on the pebbly beach. In the museum a man was taking a mold of a recently found fossil. I stepped into The Royal Glen Hotel where young Princess Victoria stayed in 1819/20. She was narrowly missed by a gunshot fired by a youth hunting birds. I had just filled up on a delicious ice cream so I didn't stay for tea. The public library was nice, but didn't have a public restroom.
There wasn't a bus stop in Salcombe Regis where the ancestors were buried so I hired a taxi
. The owner was very friendly and started chatting with the groundskeeper and asked who my people were. They said there were many Clapps in the area and yes, I looked like one of them! (We would probably be 10th cousins). He left me in Sidbury to visit the church where one of my family was baptized. After visiting that church and cemetery I had a pint at the Red Lion while I waited for the bus back to Exeter. East Ave Roomies-- Did we used to go to a Red Lion in Point? Dogs are allowed in most pubs and restaurants. Most of the ones I have seen have been small There were 3 in this pub--- one named Maizie (same as our old Bosco's Mom).
Saturday- My week MegaRider bus pass has seen many miles. At Bovey Tracy I caught the Haytor Hoppa (Saturday only bus that makes 4 trips around part of Dartmoor). I visited the visitor center and asked about the Dartmoor ponies. She said that most had been relocated recently. I then started the 1.25 mile climb to Haytor Rocks. I met 5 ponies along the way
. Wow, what a view. I didn't climb the big rocks. It was very windy at the top.
Widdecombe-in-the-Moor was my next stop. Lunch of Mac 'n Cheese (3 types including blue) and a Rosies Pig cider. A shopkeeper asked if I had been in the village green where many people were gathered. Several people and ponies Jasmine and Billy are doi sponsor.php ng a 100 mile walk to raise $ for the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust. www.dpht.co.uk/sponsor.php I had a cup of tea while waiting for the bus and called Laura. I set my alarm as it was the last bus out of the moors.
Sunday- My last full day in Exeter. I had a full English breakfast with scrambled eggs at Patisserie Valerie. I took some more pics of the Cathedral and some of the poetry on the sidewalks surrounding the Cathedral yard. There was a cute young man with a Chocolate Lab. I asked the dog's name and I swear he said Bosco. It was actually Buster. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum "Home to a million thoughts" was nice
. The textured oils by Alan Cotton were beautiful.
The FanZone had big screens for fans to watch the Rugby World Cup. Between games there was live music today. I caught the Live Jacks, a jive-jazzing group. Later the 20 piece Locked Horns played some show tunes. Their finale was "New York, New York". One woman commented that she had never seen anyone take a picture of the loo before. I explained that we don't have the portable ones for disabled/baby changing. I thought the placement of the other others was strange. Interesting food stands. I had the carvery (buffet) at the Mill on the Exe. There were many vegetables and yummy Yorkshire pudding. What a gorgeous setting.
Monday- Whew, I got everything packed and caught the bus to the station. I had a great stay at the "Creative House" Air B&B. Annabelle works at home spinning yarn. Spinning is daughter Marnie's hobby. Annabelle's daughter Elsie (age 9) is a budding artist and cutie
.She enjoyed my gift of a dream catcher and grapevine circles & supplies to make her own. They both enjoyed my card and information about Lakewood artist Joan White's wildlife neighbors.
I thought that the bus to Holsworthy left every hour, but it is every two hours. If the wi-fi is good here I may get caught up on posting to the blog. It is a gorgeous day. The countryside is hilly and loaded with sheep. Sometimes things work out for the best--- the bus stop in Holsworthy is in front of the library. It wasn't open yet, so I had a nice lunch across the street. Also across the street is the church. The bells have been ringing off and on since I got here. (My welcome???) Princess Anne is in town to celebrate the opening of a new cattle market. A lovely library that needs more space. Looks like I will be able to look at larger sizes of my photos here. Yea!
